I have long held the view that it is totally unfair for Letting Agents to charge fees to tenants. They already charge the landlord, who is their client – the party they represent.
Tony Coe, Founder & CEO of Saunders 1865 – The VIP relocation firm that advocates for tenants – said
“The vast majority of tenants are NOT represented and, like Vicky, they have no way of arguing against these fees because the supply of rental homes is so scarce. So they are forced to handover up to £600 in fees for a bit of paper pushing. To justify these fees (as the agents’ association does) on the basis that rents would have to go up is a bit rich! Rents are at the highest level they’ve ever been and letting agents’ fees have been increasing in line with rents because their commission is based on the rent being paid. That in a nutshell is why I’ve signed Vicky’s petition.”
Indeed the Letting Agent’s job is to get the highest rent from the tenant. That’s their duty to the landlord and then they charge the tenant for the privilege! How can that be right?
The Scottish Government doesn’t think it is, which is why they’ve banned agents from charging fees to tenants.
