Supercar Maker McLaren invests £50 million in UK expansion
Factory to create at least 200 jobs in Sheffield
Key Relocations from Overseas will need VIP-level Relocation Support
The £50m factory is the latest investment by carmakers in Britain since the Brexit vote. The Financial Times notes that Nissan has pledged to build new models at its Sunderland plant and Aston Martin reconfirmed a Welsh factory.
There’s no shortage of global brands that have decided to expand their presence in the UK in spite of Brexit. For sure, the UK has an awful lot of benefits to offer, quite apart from being an absolutely fantastic place to live!
McLaren wants to use the skills of the University of Sheffield’s pioneering advanced materials research centre (AMRC). Mike Flewitt, chief executive of McLaren said, “We evaluated several options to achieve this objective but the opportunity created by the AMRC . . . was compelling. At the AMRC, we will have access to some of the world’s finest composites and materials research capabilities.”
The plant should add £100m annually to the local economy by 2028, and even more if McLaren suppliers move in nearby. Growth in the UK looks positive as McLaren pledged last March to invest £1 billion in their “Track 22” plan over the next six years to transform McLaren from a nice brand into a manufacturer producing 5,000 cars a year. The move is being hailed as a victory for the UK government’s new industrial strategy.
Prof Keith Ridgway, executive dean at the AMRC, said: “This is a tremendous piece of news for the Sheffield city region and a boost for its future as the UK’s centre for advanced manufacturing.”
As families move into the local Sheffield area from overseas, they will most definitely need VIP-level relocation assistance.
