Are You Really Prepared for the French Way of Life
Your dream of moving to France has finally come true.
It’s going to be a wonderful experience for you in the land of “J’adore”, where baguettes are a plenty and snails are a delicacy, n’est-ce pas?
But are you really ready for the cultural quirks of La Belle France? Here are some quick pointers.
Whatever you do, you will not be able to escape the mandatory kissing that precedes any social encounter in France. Nor will you be able to get away from the obligatory kissing after it!
You will typically receive two kisses on the cheek, however unfamiliar you are with the company you are keeping at the time – and you will most certainly be expected to return the gesture, if not to initiate it.
The French love their bread to the extent that you will see most of them carrying a baguette on their commute back home every night,. Most often, you’ll see the top end has been torn off, due to succumbing to hunger on the way home.
The inviting smell of freshly baked bread that wafts out of every boulangerie is one that will linger with you long after your relocation assignment ends.
“We are French!” There’s no such thing as a quick meal in France. Needless to say, the exquisite taste of French cuisine deserves to be savoured – ne pas se précipiter est permis! Lunch can easily run 2 hours or more.
Coffee, Scarves and Cigarettes:
Yes, the stereotyping is spot on. Smoking at roadside cafes, while sipping an espresso and donning the most extravagant-looking scarves – these pastimes come effortlessly to the French.
Be warned, soon you will find yourself doing the exact same things – and feeling marvellous for it.
Living in France is going to be a memorable experience. Do make the effort to speak the language un peu – you will be received more warmly, and it’ll make your stay there that bit more special.
