Who Lives at One Hyde Park?

Picture of Hyde Park (the park in London)Reputed to be the world’s most expensive apartment block, One Hyde Park is the last word in luxurious London living. And up until now, the identities of the residents of the £1 billion development have been shrouded in mystery. However, this month the American edition of Vanity Fair magazine has spilled the beans and it makes for interesting reading…

The reason why, up until now, it was difficult to ascertain who had purchased apartments in the development was because most of the sales were paid for by companies based in off-shore tax havens. This is not surprising really, when one considers that the properties in question range from a modest £8 million to over £70 million!

Those who have been identified number among some of the wealthiest businessmen and entertainers in the world and, interestingly, only 17 out of the 76 apartments sold so far are listed as the owner’s primary residence. However, a detailed investigation of records from the Isle of Man and the Cayman Islands has shown that the owners include:

  • Naomi Campbell’s boyfriend, the property tycoon Vladislav Doronin
  • Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassim Bin Jabr Al-Thani, the Prime Minister of Qatar, who owns a three storey penthouse, believed to be the best apartment in the block
  • Sheikh Mohammed Saud Sultan Al-Qasimi, a member of the ruling family of the Gulf Emirate of Sharjah
  • Developer Nick Candy and his wife, the pop singer Holly Valance
  • Malaysian property investors Desmond Lim Siew Choon and Tan Kewi Yong
  • Vladimir Kim, a Kazakh businessman
  • Kazakh singer Ana Aitzhanova
  • Professor Wong Wen Young
  • Oil baroness Folorunsho Alakija, who apparently owns five units in the development
  • Ukraine’s wealthiest man Rinat Akhmetov is believed to own two apartments
  • Insurance broker Rory Carvill is among the few British residents

Swiss journalist Nicholas Shaxson, a tax haven expert, was responsible for uncovering the facts – but we get the feeling he won’t be moving into One Hyde Park any time soon!
