Looking to move somewhere with colourful neighbours? Not to mention the chance to watch history unfold right below your very window? Well, believe it or not, for £7.25 million you could buy the sixth floor apartment above the Ecuadorian embassy in Knightsbridge. Downstairs, there’s an international drama unfolding with their sitting tenant – Julian Assange of WikiLeaks fame.
Assange has been holed up in the Ecuadorian embassy since 19 June, 2012. He is wanted under a European arrest warrant and he entered the embassy seeking diplomatic asylum. Assange first came to attention as the founder and editor-in-chief of the WikiLeaks website which existed to publish news leaks and classified documents from around the world. The WikiLeaks site was shut down after it published more than 250,000 American diplomatic cables made available to them by US military intelligence analyst Bradley Manning, who has since been jailed. In November a film about Assange’s life will be released, The Fifth Estate, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the blond Australian.
However, despite the diplomatic arguments raging several floors down, the three-bedroom flat in Hans Crescent is still commanding the sort of high property price that is typical of Knightsbridge. Hans Crescent is a curved street that runs from Brompton Road, along the north east side of Harrods and through to Sloane Street. A recent report suggested that property prices in Knightsbridge were in direct proportion to their distance from the famous department store and it is certainly one of the most popular areas to live in for the international super-rich. Directly opposite the store, the Candy brothers’ ultra-luxurious development One Hyde Park has seen prices of up to £100 million for an apartment, so perhaps someone might see the Hans Crescent property as a bargain!
As always, the key to finding an excellent value flat in London, is to do your research, which takes a lot of time an effort – that is, unless you retain Saunders 1865 to conduct your property search for purchase or rental.
