Google & Facebook ramp up their London HQs

A strong vote of confidence in the UK post-Brexit

Google announce its new London HQ will be built in Kings Cross, and Facebook’s contemporary offices will be nearby in Fitzrovia.

These decisions are both votes of confidence for London and the UK after the Brexit decision.

They follow after Apple’s recent decision to do the same in the revamped Battersea Power Station. These decisions by three tech giants are seen as a significant boost to the technology sector in the UK.

Google

Google’s new London premises should be completed by 2020, increasing their current 4,000 headcount in the UK to around 7,000. Experts have estimated that Google will be investing around £1bn in the project.

Designed by Thomas Heatherwick, creator of the controversial Garden Bridge planned over the Thames, the new 650,000 sqft Google HQ will be anything but boring. Google are well known for their futuristic offices.

Facebook will be expanding its UK presence by 50%, to employ a further 500 employees in a variety of positions, accommodated in their Fitzrovia operations. Their premises, also in a development currently under construction, will be completed in 2017.

Many of the new employment positions will be in the highly-skilled engineering arena. Facebook has its largest engineering base in the UK, outside of the US. Their newly launched Workplace platform is continually being developed at their current London office.

These developments will bring an influx of new families, couples, and singles. They will all need housing, schools and access to public transport.

With both Kings Cross and Fitzrovia being so close to the City, there are plenty of accommodation options in and around the surrounding areas. Both are upmarket addresses and within 3 miles of central London.

Excellent public, private and international schools are in abundance. Public schools are free, whereas the others charge fees. You need to choose the right school for your children, bearing in mind that you would need to live in the catchment area of any public school you choose, or an easy commute of the others.

If you are transferring to either district, there are many housing options to choose from. However, London’s cumbersome rental system, plus choosing the right area to live in make it difficult for newcomers to go solo. Saunders 1865 are the experts in relocation.
