Most people relocating from overseas to London have never heard of council tax is. We always pre-warn our clients about council tax so they are prepared for it, and so they include it in their budgeting.

When it comes as a surprise it can lead to disappointment and that tends to backfire on the company that’s relocating the family to the UK.

What is council tax?

Council Tax is a tax on domestic property collected by your local council. The Local Authority use it to pay for local services such as schools, rubbish (garbage) collection, roads and street lighting, etc. It replaced the old “rates”.

How is Council Tax calculated?

Each property has an allocated a value and will fall in the value bands ranging from A to H. Each band is based upon the capital value of the property on 1st April 1991.

Here are the bands and range of values for each band:

  • Band A:   up to and including £40,000
  • Band B: £40,001 to £52,000
  • Band C: £52,001 to £68,000
  • Band D: £68,001 to £88,000
  • Band E: £88,001 to £120,000
  • Band F: £120,001 to £160,000
  • Band G: £160,001 to £320,000
  • Band H: over £320,000

Council Tax is also dependent upon how the home is occupied, with potential for discounts and exemptions where applicable.

For example, an adult occupant qualifies for a 25% discount if they are the only adult living in the property.
